Bioinformatics is an application used in data analysis along with other software tools and methods to help understand different types of biological data. In data mining, the application plays a vital role with regards to gene development and biological texts. Whereas, bioinformatics also plays an integral role in identifying gene protein, regulation and expression. In most cases, these processes are used to help researchers and scientists gain a better understanding of the natural and evolutionary processes associated with molecular biology. For, if these individuals can learn to modify cellular structures, it is believed the process could have the potential to cure a number of diseases and illnesses.

When the application is integrated with data, individuals have the ability to analyze and catalogue networks and pathways which are essential to the field of systems biology. Whereas, the application can also be used in the field of structural biology to model and simulate RNA and DNA proteins. As such, anyone working in any of these areas must have a strong understanding of analytics, math, chemistry, biology and statistics in order to be successful.

In the past, the application had a different meaning and perspective than it does today. For, the name was coined in 1970 by Paulien Hogeweg and Ben Hesper with reference to the study of data management and information processes. As such, the definition placed bioinformatics in a field parallel to biochemistry. Whereas, all aspects of biological data now reside under the umbrella of bioinformatics.

Currently, the application is most often used in molecular biology, systems biology and biochemistry. For, the goal has now become to better understand how cellular structures and activities are altered during different stages of disease. In addition, researchers are now using the application to analyze and interpret large pockets of data as related to the field of medical research and medicine.
