How Green Card Process Works

By Jeffrey Bennett

Hundreds of people come to United States to visit. Either due to travel or employment, their reasons differs from one another. Resident permanency is the wish of others. There are records in Arizona where immigrants do the green card process Tucson.

The purpose of the green card is for legal identification of the holder by the USCIS or U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. It allows the immigrants to live and to work in the country lawfully. It also has the allowances and privileges of any natural citizen. The immigration office accepts the application and other related paperwork for this card.

Before you can apply, you must make sure that you are eligible. You must belong in one of the categories under the Immigration and Nationality Act. It can either be through employment, family members, marriage, special immigrant and other special categories.

You may then proceed to apply when you are eligible. It is generally simple and easy to complete. First, you have to submit and have your immigration petition approved. With that and the immigration visa, you may now send in an application. If an approved petition is one that you do not have, concurrent filing can be done.

Where you are currently located is necessary to select which process is appropriate to you. If your location is anywhere inside the United States, an adjustment of status is filed at USCIS. If not, you will have to do consular processing overseas of any U. S. Department of State.

The USCIS will the review you application. If it passes, they will then schedule you to do biometrics. They are to get your photos, signature, and fingerprints in this appointment. After that, you will be scheduled for an interview with USCIS. They will ask questions that will help them decide if they are to accept your application. Their decision takes time. Hence, do not expect a feedback on the application status from them during the interview.

You will be given a card issuance once everything is approved. This card is valid for ten years. You need to keep it with you always. Make it sure that you do not lose it or even misplace it. If that happens, file for replacement immediately. It is also required that you apply for card renewal when the expiry date is within six months.

As a holder, you are subject to the rights under the United States law and government. They are the rights to permanently live, to legally work, and to be protected by the laws of the country. These are all under the condition that you do not commit any illegal actions under the immigration law.

One of the features of the card is you have the chance to be a U. S. Citizen through the naturalization process. You may opt to apply once you have resided in the country for five years and above. One of its benefits is it allows you is the right to vote at elections. You may also sponsor a petition for a family member provided that he is eligible and qualified.
