With Various Youth Programs Matthews NC Hopes To Reach Troubled Young People

By Joseph Hayes

Modern communities are so much different than the ones in days gone by where people cared for each other and helped each other. Today, it seems as if it is everyone for himself. As a result, more and more people are becoming isolated in the midst of the crowds around them. Young people are especially vulnerable when they are not part of caring communities. Without good youth programs Matthews NC youngsters are in danger of becoming delinquents.

Family structures have also changed over the years, often for the worse. Very few modern families still spend time together. Parents barely communicate with their children and there never seem to be enough time to participate in activities together. The result is often young people that enjoy no support, emotional nurturing and loving direction from their parents. Sadly, many of them go look for these things in the wrong places.

The unemployment rate is steadily rising and it is especially young people that become despondent. Consequently, they drop out of school because they simply cannot see the point. This has resulted in large numbers of youngsters that have no skills or experience, making it highly unlikely that they will find employment. Some organizations therefore focus their efforts on providing skills training to young people and to help them find jobs.

Unemployed young people from dysfunctional families often become troubled youngsters with no sense of self worth, no ambition and no confidence in society. Many organizations and churches offer these young people counseling that can help them to find meaning in their lives, to gain confidence and to take positive steps to improve their lot. They offer these youngsters acceptance and respect, something they often do not get at home.

The problem is compounded by the fact that the number of young people addicted to drugs and alcohol has shown an alarming increase. They use substances to make them feel better and to cope with the terrible reality of their day to day lives. There are organizations that offer rehabilitation but it is extremely difficult to convince young addicts to accept the help offered to them.

Another huge problem faced by organizations trying to help young people is the fact that so many of them are homeless. They drift around and never attend a program for long enough to truly benefit. That is why some organizations focus on providing these youngsters with a place to sleep and a square meal. These places of safety are often also the venue where other organizations offer their assistance.

Churches, local authorities and charities do their best to help troubled young people but their hands are tied due to a severe lack of resources. There are just too many youngsters that need help and not enough people, facilities or money to reach out to them. With only a fraction of young people having access to a helping hand one cannot but think that society has failed the rest.

Social experts warn that unless the authorities and indeed every citizen start taking the plight of troubled young people seriously society as a whole will suffer. The future depends upon well adjusted young people that can take their place in society. The issue must become an urgent priority.
