Items That Create Occupational Therapy Kits For Children

By Joshua Kennedy

Occupational therapy practitioners are usually helping many children every day, either school-based or in their own practices. These children are often of various ages and need different activities to help improve their skills. Given how busy they are, it is very important to have the occupational therapy kits for children ready and planned for any skills or needs they may need to work on.

The therapist will create the kits according to what they most use and need. Still, they all start with the basic items that each practitioner uses and which can be used for a wide array of activities. Some of these versatile items would be the colored pencils, of different sizes and shapes, scissors, erasers, scotch tape, straws, rubber bands, tissue paper, construction paper and so on.

Another very used idea is to create themed kits and have them ready throughout the year. You can also have seasonal ones, and get the supplies whenever you see them in stores and this way you will be always ready. Select the items you need based on the activities you have or skills that you need to help kids with. It will be easier if you group them like this when you go from one session to another.

For starters, make a list of what you need, what is urgent and what can be bought or used later. Some items are super versatile and can be used in a ton of different ways for your activities, and these are the items you need to go for. Also, it is a good idea to get multiple containers and store kits separately and classify the kits by size, use, age, whatever you feel it's the best. Keep in mind that you can also ask a colleague to help if you are unsure about some items in the kit.

Based on your budget you can go to different stores to get your supplies, but most of the things are found in big retails chains. Look for weekly sales or check out the craft sections. Also you can find nice and versatile things at the dollar stores. Make a list of what item you need and buy them as you see a good deal.

Apart from the items mentioned above, the scissors, crayons, glue, the occupational therapy kit can also contain jump ropes for some fun activities, clothespins, which are very versatile, wind-up toys, hole punched pieces and hole puncher, slinky, puffer balls, tennis balls or any type of balls you think are useful for your activities.

Play dough is also a very versatile item that can be used in several activities and can be bought or made at home. A posable figurine is great to use for body awareness or sensory processing. Small or medium beads or small manipulatives are excellent to be used in various activities or in conjunction with other items: for example tongs or bug catchers.

Everyone knows how much children like stickers, especially as they are so diverse and colorful. These, along with strings and ropes, cannot miss from your kit. It is important to have the starting items, the most versatile ones and then you will start adding more items and tools while you create new games in your sessions.
