Conferences which aid in assisting young people in learning leadership, entrepreneurship and empowerment can be an excellent experience. A good example would be the one the Youth Education Empowerment Organizers Of Sierra Leone and other groups host on an annual basis. Whether desiring to become a leader, or just helping out with community projects, these conferences provide a platform in which young people can learn how to do so.
The conference works to empower, motivate and inspire young people to make positive changes in different communities. Whereas, other groups focus on global practices and promoting social inclusion, active participation in political issues which effect private and public stakeholders.
By changing locations each year and placing the event headquarters in a different town, a number of communities benefit. Delegates are joined by business owners and community members at each summit to discuss the most pressing needs with regards to the young people in that specific area. Whether related to underemployment, unemployment, pay rates, violence or workplace transformation, these and other issues are often debated and discussed during these events.
Each conference or summit host a different theme. Most recently, the topic was on keeping peace throughout the process of creating sustainable projects and following local elections. During the event, delegates debated and made policies which were aimed at better improving various aspects of the local community.
As part of the process, the young people of the country also affirmed a commitment to maintain peace, even beyond the ongoing violence in the country following elections. In doing so, the conference played an important and vital role in reducing such violence.
During the event, the public and private sector were given the opportunity to make suggestions. In response, the government and private sector both agreed that the most pressing issue was to build a strong foundation for young people to learn new skills, develop leadership opportunities and the basics of entrepreneurship. After which, all agreed that these were the most important priorities when it came to strengthening the relationships of the young people of the country.
A survey provided to attendees at the end of the conference suggested that there were already young people establishing youth-led organizations. While this is the case, the young people were not doing so to help the community, rather to jump ship due to conflict in existing organizations. Whereas, others were doing so based on a misconception that leaders often have power, fame and money while having hopes of moving into roles such as Executive and Chief Executive Officers.
While community members, business owners, delegates and others are hopeful these new organizations will be successful, past experience has left doubt in the minds of many. In addition, post-conference surveys also show that 50% of organizations led by youth lacked the proper structure to succeed. Whereas, over seventy eight percent suggested that members had the knowledge or financial resources required to move these organizations forward.
