By Angela Scott

In general, a meteorologist is someone who predicts the weather. This, however, is not the only role of a meteorologist. They research and study the characteristics of the atmosphere and how it affects the environment during different time of an year. A consultant meteorologist may serve as an individual working for a company for a fee or as a worker in a government agency, school institution among other places.

Every career has several fields involved in it since several departments are involved. In education, you may choose history or science. In medicine, you may choose neurosurgery or gynecology and so on. In meteorology, the same case applies. The first step in the career is to settle in your field of specialty. You may choose to be an operational meteorologist who is responsible for weather forecasting among many other options.

As you choose a career usually, you already have a place you would like to work in mind. This goes a long way in motivating you. When you know what you want, then you strive to reach for it. In this career you have so many opportunities. You may choose to work with the government in the defense department or even as a meteorology professor.

Certification is a very important step in every career. This is like being told that you are qualified to undertake whatever you aspire to do. Before the certification, you will need to have obtained a bachelors degree in meteorology from a well -recognized institution either within or outside of the country.

You should be ready to undergo any kind of training needed. In most companies, even after employment, you will need to undergo some training with them. Once they consider you qualified to do the job, then they can post you in different offices. For example, the national weather service requires you to undergo 200 hours of training on the job.

Make a point of attending meteorological conventions and conferences. This is where you meet new people and learn new things. You will be able to exchange ideas that help you in building your career. You also get connections in high places. This means that when you need to pitch an idea, you have the connections to the right people.

You should make the effort of trying to find a job. It is very rare for a job to come find you unless you are very well known. Look up websites especially those of places you would like to work in case there is a job alert. You should also apply to as many places as you possibly can and attend all the interviews you can and it just might be your lucky day.

After you get the job, do your best at it. Do not disappoint the people who gave you a chance. You should be willing to work at odd hours especially because this is weather and can change in the blink of an eye. This kind of drive takes the career to greater heights.
