Fresh Wind Turbine Safety Rules For Workers

By Brenda Meyer

A wind power plant with turbines exposes both visitors and workers to such risky condition as arch flash, electric hazards, confined spaces and respiratory protection, among others that are unique to each plant. There are standard wind turbine safety precautions meant to protect workers and other people who might be at the plant. They also help to forestall danger by creating awareness.

First aid should be available and provided by trained personnel. It is more important whenever there is a project being carried out at the plant. All employees and workers at such a plant need certification on first aid to avoid wasting time as you wait for emergency response. The team on site requires an equipped first aid kit to deal with the common dangers of electric shock, falling and other possible injuries.

The management must assess risk and evaluate all installations from time to time. This involves determining the strength of all moving parts, wiring and heights on site. With structures made of metal that is exposed to rust, they will be weakened by natural elements. Assessment for risks should also be specific to the task being performed. Control measures must be put in place before the work commences.

All workers, employees and visitors to the site should wear protective gear at all times. The gears include footwear, helmets, vests, gloves and arrest lanyards, among others whenever they are on site. Remember that the turbines are high and are used for generating electricity. Without adequate protection, people within the premises will be exposed to danger.

Test all equipment and tools that are used on site. This begins by ensuring that they are obtained from a reliable supplier. Weak tools expose users to injuries. Check the integrity of electric hoists, ladders, fall arrest protection systems, elevators and pulleys or cranes, among many others. Any weakness on these equipment will cause danger during work.

Monitor the weather actively. The height of turbines makes the vulnerable to adverse weather like lightening. Strong winds are also devastating and likely to cause damage, injuries and falls to workers during maintenance. The weather should be a major factor whenever you are installing, servicing or maintaining the turbines to avoid falling or danger in the process.

Installation within the plant must be maintained properly. This will protect visitors, employees and workers on site from broken pillars falling, blades and falls from heights. Rusty areas need proper attention as well as moving parts. This requires routine maintenance and being a keen observer of all areas. A little oversight can lead to a massive disaster.

Only healthy and strong workers should be allowed at the plant. This calls for regular monitoring and quick action whenever a problem is detected. The sick and weak must never be allowed to go up turbines. Workers who fear heights or enclosed spaces should also not be assigned duties in such places. Ensure that workers stick to stipulated hours to avoid fatigue. This could cause them to fall off heights leading to injuries and even fatalities.
