Fiber optics uses light as the means of sending information. The core contains strands which are usually very thin and tiny as compared to the human hair and this is where the refraction of light takes place. The core is surrounded by a middle tube which is usually of a lower refractive index when compared to the core fibers. It prevents light being refracted from escaping from the core. There is then an outer casing which prevents the internal components from mechanical damage.

There are different types of fibers with the major difference being in the thickness of the strands. Single mode optic fibers have very thin strands making light travel straight along their cores. Multi mode fibers have wider strands which gives room for light to travel in different paths within the core. Gastroscopes and fiberscopes are also other types of fiber optics that can be used.

The optic technologies is superior to its predecessor the copper wire in many ways. It is resistant to electromagnetic interference which is usually a common problem when using copper wires. The fact that it is not affected by electromagnetic interferences makes it immune to attacks by hackers who usually see electromagnetic signals as a way of tapping and getting data leaks.

In terms of installation the optic cables are usually very light making them very convenient to transport and workers to lay during installation . The fact that minimal interferences occur within the cables, it ensures that communication usually has very good clarity and only requires one to use low frequency transmitters. This transmitters are not only cheaper but also consume very low per saving on costs.

Optic fibers are not however free from disadvantages. Installation cost of the cables especially in built up urban areas is usually very high and the wires are also affected by the external environment such as hydrogen. Joining them up is not also not a very easy task unlike in copper wires as it must very carefully be done to prevent messing up with the transmission of the light.

More and more people have embraced the use of this technology. Use of fiber optic cable has spread to the medical field. It is now being used in study of internal body parts when detecting illnesses. Industries have also embraced the technology and it is now extensively used to inspect pies for cracks and also minor defects in machine parts during manufacture.
