What To Do To Avoid LGBT Workplace Discrimination

By Raymond Brooks

Discrimination in the workplace is a phenomenon that has slowly been managed. However, there are still some places where people are discriminated against because they are different from the rest of the people in an office. Among the common type of discrimination are gender and race discrimination. In the modern world, the sexual orientation has diversified which has led to the recognition of the Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. However, the level of discrimination against this community has also increased. The law mandates that all employees be treated in the same way regardless of their race, sexual orientation and gender. Here are some of the steps you should take to avoid LGBT workplace discrimination:

You should start by sensitizing your employees on the different sexual orientations that are found in the society. In some cases, people discriminate against this community because they fail to understand them. Ensure that every employee understands that this community exists. You can achieve this goal by having campaigns that educate your employees on the different types of sexual orientations.

Rules should be set to prohibit any form of segregation. These rules should be specific to ensure that the workers understand the standing of the company on the issues of segregation. In a company where there are strict rules on discrimination, the workers will automatically avoid displaying characters related to segregation.

Set consequences that are to be faced by any employee who discriminates against this community. People are motivated by either positive or negative reinforcement. To avoid a specific behavior amongst your employees, it is advised to set strict punitive measures. For instance, when an employee discriminates another employee, then you can choose to demote them. When there are consequences, then people avoid showing any form of unfair treatment.

You should encourage a culture of inclusion and appreciation in your company. People of different gender, races, and social orientation should be accepted by the management. A company which accommodates people from this community, teach the rest of the company to accept people from this community too. When a company contains different communities, it is good to share the work equally and with fairness.

The organization or company you work in should welcome people from this community. This will make it easier for the other employees to socialize with them and see that they are also human beings who need to be appreciated. The organization should form a culture that shows support for them regardless of what other people might think. For people to follow your rules and policies you have to lead by example.

Among the main areas where the LGBT community is discriminated is during the recruitment stage. The people that are involved in the recruitment process should be open-minded. They should recognize the LGBT community as part of the society. You should also ensure that you vet the recruitment process to ensure that there are no discriminatory practices.

In a work setting, it is important that everyone is treated fairly and equally. The LGBT community has not been accepted in a majority of the workplaces. They are treated differently which affects their performance at work. In some cases, when one is from this community, they are rarely given a chance to work in certain companies. You need to ensure that within your company, this group is treated fairly. The article highlights some of the ways that you can create a working environment where everyone in the workplace respects and treats this community fairly.
