Searching For Umn Off Campus Housing

By Sandra Moore

When a student is accepted by a university many will need to leave home and find some suitable living accommodation. A large number of universities have student block accommodation on site but places are limited and they tend to fill up quickly. If you are looking for umn off campus housing there are some important things to think about and some care is needed before you make any decisions.

Before you begin your search for somewhere to live you should take a careful look at your finances to work out how much you have to pay the rent each month. Leasing a one bedroom apartment will cost around six hundred dollars per month and this may or may not be furnished. A three bed house will cost approximately fifteen hundred dollars but you will also need to budget for the utility bills which are separate.

A sensible place to search for a place to live is at your university. Most will have notice boards displaying adverts for properties that are available for students to rent. It can be worth chatting with teachers, friends and fellow students to see if they have any advice or help.

Many new students will find it difficult to manage their finances when they are away from home and a lot will take on multiple jobs to pay their expenses. A practical solution to this financial pressure is to share a property with another student. This is a very cost effective way to get a place to live and it means you are not solely responsible for the monthly bills.

Before you commit to a property you need to take time to think carefully about the costs of furnishings, decorating and other household items. Fully furnished properties are available but will be expensive and most will be part or unfurnished. Another thing to note is that the first months rent will be doubled as it includes your deposit against damages which is refundable if you leave the property in good condition.

Some of the large housing complexes that cater specifically for students will have extra facilities for their tenants use. Fitness centers, pools and communal reading areas are offered and internet access is also usually available. Other things such as cafes, bars and supermarkets maybe also be available which you may find useful.

Another plus point with many housing sites is the location and proximity to the university. Many sites are within walking distance and this takes away the need to pay money for transport. Some of the larger universities may provide a shuttle bus to parts of town and this is worth looking into.

Another consideration is the length of time you are staying in the rental property. Most landlords and letting companies will offer a six to twelve month lease which you will need to sign before taking on a property. When your course is due to last for more than a couple of years, it is worth asking for a longer tenancy, and a discount may be offered if you pay the rent in advance.
