Locating Umn Off Campus Housing

By Nancy Jackson

A lot of students will have to leave their family home after securing a place at a university and find a place to live near to where they are studying. Many of the universities will have student housing blocks on site but places will be limited. When trying to locate umn off campus housing, there are some very important points to consider, before you make any decisions.

Before you start your search for a rental property, and make any decisions, you should look at your finances and calculate out how much money you have available every month. Renting a small flat will cost approximately six hundred dollars per month which may include basic furnishings. A large house with 2 or 3 bedrooms will come in at around fifteen hundred bucks and your utilities such as water and electric will be metered and you are charged for what you consume.

One of the best places to find a place is by asking around the university and checking adverts that are posted. Most will have advertising boards where details of available properties are displayed. It is also a good idea to chat with other students and your lecturers to see if they can assist in your search and point you in the right direction.

Many young people find it extremely difficult to manage their money when away from their parents for the first time and a large number of students take multiple jobs to pay their way. A practical way to bring down monthly outgoings is to share your living accommodation with others at the university. This is a good way to get your own place and you are not going to be paying all of the utility bills and rent.

Before you sign a lease it is useful to take time to think about the costs of furnishing your accommodation to make it comfortable. Furnished properties are available but the majority will be unfurnished or part furnished. Another thing to consider is that the first month's rent payment will be doubled as it includes a returnable deposit against any damages to the property.

Many dedicated housing sites that offer student accommodation will have some extra facilities for their tenants. Swimming pools, gyms and study rooms are offered and free internet access is usually available. Other useful amenities such as gaming rooms and bars maybe on site but these will be on a pay as you use basis.

One of the advantages off campus housing sites is that they are close to the universities. Many complexes will only be a short walk away from your place of learning and you will not have to spend money to use buses and cabs. Some larger universities will often provide a free shuttle bus to certain parts of town and this is also worth checking out.

One thing for to consider carefully is the length of time you wish to rent a property for. Most of the letting companies and agents will want a one year tenancy agreement to be signed. Longer term leases are often offered and this is sometimes good financially, as a discount can be negotiated for a longer term let, if you pay up front.
