How To Ensure Efficient Campus Crisis Planning

By Diane Kennedy

Sometimes, especially when you least it expect problems come up. This end up leaving the people in charge in a state of confusion, and can lead to damaged property, injured people or even deaths. This is why efficient campus crisis planning is necessary. It ensures that you are prepared for anything that may come your way.

You cannot deal with something, if you do not know what it is. Identifying the crisis is always the first step. Different geographical locations, are affected by different issues. Some areas may be prone to hurricanes or tornadoes, while others are prone to flooding. If the school lies in one of these areas, then you should talk to the local meteorological department, to know the possible risk and frequency of occurrence. This will allow you to be prepared and ensure that even your buildings can handle the hazards.

The administration should establish a team, to deal with any types of emergency that may face the campus. They should be able to identify, establish and set up appropriate responses, as well as having a recovery plan in place. They should be able to think rationally and quickly under pressure.

When you put many students in one institution, the chances of crime and violence are always high. You should be able to determine the cause of any demonstrations, and if possible deal with it in a nonviolent manner. In some cases, the students may be too rowdy to talk to and force may need to be used. Having a healthy relationship with the local law enforcement, will come in handy as they can help you deal with the students.

Having all the relevant information is a plus for any administration. This can be collected by setting up avenues through which students and the staff can communicate with the administration. This will allow you to note any complaints which may pose a future threat to the school. It can also help you identify areas that you will need to work on, in order to ensure you are well prepared. When developing your action plan, you should also incorporate employee opinions.

Learn from past mistakes. In most institutions, some of the disasters have most likely occurred before. By assessing how you responded previously, you can improve on your methodology. It will also help you update your action plan, to help you be better prepared in the face of a similar problem.

All establishments need to have safety equipment and procedures in place. Whether it is fire extinguishers, or bunkers in case of tornadoes. They need to be in good condition and equipment should be regular checked, to ensure that they are working. Regular drills should be run, to make sure that the people within the school know how to respond. All the assembly points should be accessible and strategically placed.

Being prepared at all times is the best plan. Due to the unpredictability of most disasters, their prevention may be next to impossible. Conducting regular drills will ensure that the staff and the students within the school are prepared to deal with most hazards.
